# Anomalous spend

> Get notified when spending suddenly deviates from your normal pattern

Anomalous spend watches your usage against your own historical pattern and alerts you when spending jumps in a way that doesn't look like business as usual. It's the alert you want when you're worried about runaway costs you wouldn't catch with a fixed dollar threshold, because what "high" looks like depends on how much you normally spend.

## When to use it

* A team or key suddenly spending several times what it usually does on a given day.
* Catching unexpected cost spikes before they show up on the next invoice.
* An early signal that something has changed in your traffic: a deployed bug, a runaway loop, a misconfigured client.

This alert needs a few weeks of consistent usage to learn what "normal" looks like. Very new accounts and accounts with highly irregular usage aren't a good fit. Pair them with [low balance](/docs/alerts/low-balance) instead.

## What you configure

| Setting | What it does |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Sensitivity** | How sensitive the detection is. *High* catches smaller jumps (more alerts), *Medium* is balanced, *Low* only fires on extreme spikes. |
| **Scope** | What you want to watch — Organization, Team, individual User, or Per API Key. You can pick more than one. |
| **Schedule** | How often to evaluate — hourly, daily, or weekly. |

For organization-level scopes, you'll see the options your role has access to.

## How you're notified

Email and/or SMS, based on your preferences in **Settings → Notifications**. See [the alerts overview](/docs/alerts/overview) for delivery details and cooldown behavior.
